Luckily after reading the article I realized that I would have passed the test with flying colours. I’ve also been in the position of interviewing potential UX designers, researchers and visual specialists. Many times the candidate may have had a Computer science degree, and shown me the applications they’ve created and ‘designed’ the interface for.
Unfortunately in most cases the ability to code does not go hand in hand with the ability to create great experiences for their users. It is very rare to find people equally gifted with both the right side and left side of their brains. This is why software (and web) development is a most commonly a collaborative team sport.
